The PEARLS Protocol KLE JN Medical College marks a significant milestone in global maternal and child health research. The launch took place on November 24, 2025, at the JNMC Women’s and Children’s Health Research Unit in Belagavi. Senior leaders, faculty members, and representatives from national and international organisations attended the event.
This project holds special importance. It is the first research initiative from the institution to receive direct funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant showcases growing confidence in the research capabilities of KLE JN Medical College and KAHER.
The PEARLS Trial focuses on preventing pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia affects many expectant mothers worldwide and remains a major health concern. Therefore, the study aims to develop evidence that can guide clinical care, screening, and maternal health policy.
The programme is supported by global research partners. Collaborators include the Concept Foundation Geneva, Burnet Institute Australia, University of Ghana, University of Nairobi Kenya, and the University of South Africa. These partnerships encourage knowledge exchange and strengthen international cooperation.
Alongside the launch, a structured training programme took place for the research teams. Experts conducted detailed sessions on study protocol, ethics, and implementation strategies. Trainers included Ms. Rachel Craik, Ms. Kara Blackburn, Dr. Samuel Oppong, and Dr. Jennifer Okore. Their engagement added valuable insight and strengthened the readiness of the participating teams.
Leaders and faculty members expressed strong commitment to advancing research that improves real-world health outcomes. Their involvement reflects a collective dedication to innovation and public health impact.
In conclusion, the launch of the PEARLS Protocol KLE JN Medical College demonstrates scientific ambition, teamwork, and long-term vision. It reinforces KLE’s role in shaping evidence-based healthcare for women and children across the world.
