On April 30, 2025, Karnataka and other parts of India celebrated Basava Jayanti, honoring the 12th-century philosopher and social reformer Jagadguru Basaveshwara. Belagavi hosted a series of events emphasizing unity, cultural heritage, and Basavanna’s teachings.

🛕 Significance of Basava Jayanti

Basavanna, founder of the Lingayat tradition, championed social reform by advocating for:

  • Equality: He opposed caste and gender discrimination, promoting a society where all individuals are treated equally.

  • Dignity of Labor (Kayaka): He emphasized that honest work is a form of worship, encapsulated in his saying, “Kayakave Kailasa” (Work is Heaven).

  • Community Sharing (Dasoha): He encouraged sharing one’s earnings with the community, fostering social welfare.

His teachings laid the foundation for a casteless and equitable society, principles that continue to resonate today.
