First Successful Bone Marrow Transplant at KLE Cancer Hospital
KLE Society has established a state of the art Cancer Hospital at Belagavi. The facility offers services in cancer diagnosis, cure and rehabilitation along with palliative care services.
In a significant medical milestone, KLE Dr Sampatkumar S. Shivanagi Cancer Hospital has successfully performed its first Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), marking a new chapter in advanced haematology and cancer treatment. This achievement strengthens the hospital’s position as a leading centre for bone marrow transplantation in North Karnataka and highlights its commitment to delivering world-class oncology care.
The procedure was successfully led by Paediatric Haematologist Dr Abhilasha and her team, whose expertise ensured a seamless and successful transplant. The first BMT patient is recovering well,reinforcing the hospital’s capabilities in providing cutting-edge haematological and oncological treatments. The hospital’s BMT programme will cater to patients suffering from blood cancers(leukaemia, Iymphoma, multiple myeloma) and severe haematological disorders (thalassaemia,aplastic anaemia, etc.), offering both autologous and allogeneic transplants.
India faces a rising burden of cancer, with over 1.46 milion new cases annually, including more than 50,000 childhood cancer diagnoses each year. Leukaemia remains the most common paediatric cancer, necessitating early diagnosis and access to specialised treatment facilities. The hospital’s BMT unit aims to bridge the gap in affordable, high-quality cancer care for children and adults.
Modern day cancer care has largely been confined to the metropolitan cities which often makes the same unaffordable and inaccessible to those that need it the most. The establishment which was inaugurated by Smt Droupadi Murmu in Jan 2025 in part of KLE’s endeavour to bring world class healthcare facilities to the doorsteps of people in Tier II cities and nearby villages. Equipped with the services skilled and knowledgeable professionals the hospital facilitates the trilogy of cancer treatments; ie., Surgical oncology, Radiation and Clinical Oncology
The Hospital also serves as a learning centre for aspiring oncologists and facilitates research in commonly prevalent cancer ailments in the region.
